PIERRE AND THE FISH - BETA VERSION: README
***********************

Thank you for downloading the beta version of "Pierre and the Fish"! This is a short game that I have written over the course of five days.

Game Description
----------------
Pierre is piloting a submarine in the depths of the SeedWeed Sea to collect specimen for study. Beware the Fish! The Fish likes to eat oceanographers, especially in submarines. As Pierre, collect as many of the little red fishies as you can before you are lunch!

Controls
--------
[SPACE] - controls the submarine (within the game)
Holding [SPACE] will case the submarine tilt upwards
Releasing [SPACE] with case the submarine to tilt downwards
Everytime [SPACE] is toggled, the submarine gets a speed boost

[ENTER] - starts the game (within the menu)

[ESCAPE] - quits the game (at any time)

[F2] - toggles the sound on/off

Game Creatures
--------------
Fishies - swim in schools. Collect as many of these as you can!
Seedweed - a large seed with two long strands of weed.
Hitting the seed pod will cause your submarine to slow down
The Fish - the terror of the deep! Prefers to eat submarines.

Known Issues
------------
- the game will not work properly in 16 bbp graphics modes
- the game keeps running if you switch between windows, causing everything to jump when you return to the game
- there have been reports of occasional slowdowns, but I have not been able to extensively test for this
- if you modify the config file to run in windowed mode, the "close window" button does not work (you must use escape)

Config File
-----------
By default, the game runs at fullscreen at 1024 by 768, 32bbp resolution. If you want to try and run the game at a different resolution, or toggle between windowed/fullscreen, the appropriate values are stored within the configuration file. I cannot vouch for the safety of changing these values to ones unsupported by your video card, so use at your own risk.
(You can also change the high score that way too, but you're only cheating yourself...)

Construction Notes (for those who are interested)
------------------
Code written in C++ using Code::Blocks and MinGW/GCC as the compiler
Graphics are done in OpenGL
SDL and its extension are used as the framework for set up and input
FMOD is used for playing the music and sound
Graphics made with the GIMP and Inkscape
Music was written in Modplug Tracker
Sound effects were modified from instrument samples using Audacity

Have fun dodging the Fish!
